Mathern Vets took part in the two day Wim Bode International Vets Tournament in Penarth and ran out worthy winners. The Vagabonds showed what a quality squad they have this season by winning the tournament playing some great football, scoring nine goals whilst only conceding one.
Teams from Holland, Belgium, England and Wales took part in the two day event played at the Sully Sports and Leisure Complex near Penarth, The Mathern lads beat Overmere (Belgium) 4-0, Cardiff Academicals (Wales) 2-0 and Rank Outsiders (England) 2-1, to finish top of Group A and progress into Saturday's Final.
The Tournament Final saw Mathern play host club and local favourites Penarth Wanderers Vets.
In a closely contested match Mathern ran out 1-0 winners, courtesy of a Phil Tranter goal.
The weekend proved memorable for all concerned with Phil Tranter picking up the 'Man of the Tournament Award 'after scoring 5 goals
and Colin Jeffries (Leggit) playing for the 'Cardiff City Legends' in the Exhibition game against the Rest of Europe.
Mathern hope to travel to Belgium next May to defend their title.
